Healthy snacking isn’t always easy, but it is always rewarding.
Us health conscious eaters are always looking for ways to add some funk and flavor to our meals and snacking game. In this article we’re going to have a look at some of our favorite healthy ingredients to add to our snacking recipes. The day just got a little more flavorful!
Coconut Flakes
Shredded coconut or coconut flakes are a high fiber snack which helps make you feel fuller for longer. It can also help limit your risk for high cholesterol, heart disease, certain types of cancer, and constipation and other digestive issues. Coconut also contains manganese, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc and selenium. Talk about a nutritious boost! Snack on coconut flakes directly, or add shredded coconut to your trail mix, healthy cookie recipe, or to your morning breakfast.
Granola
Mmm… there’s nothing like the crunch a good healthy granola has to offer. You can add granola to your day in all shapes and sizes in a variety of ways. We love to add it to our yogurt, or to just eat it straight with our favorite alternative milk option. You can also add granola to your trail mix with your favorite nuts and seeds, and maybe even some unsweetened chocolate chips? If you’re feeling up for it, then you can make a healthy granola bar recipe, yum!
Nuts and Seeds
The array of nuts and seeds we can snack on and enjoy throughout the day almost feels endless. There’s cashews, walnuts, brazil nuts, almonds, you just name it and it’s a healthy boost of protein, vitamins and minerals for you. Nuts are a great snack for your kids too and can help improve cognitive development! And don’t get us started on those seeds. We add seeds to just about everything.
Our favorite seeds include hemp seed, flax seed, chia seeds, sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds. Add any combination of seeds to your salads, breakfast and snacks and your day just got a whole lot healthier!
Dried Fruit
Dried fruits are completely overlooked and underrated. You can get some of your best snacking, really hitting that sweet tooth spot, with dried fruit. They also work as a fantastic alternative to that tub of ice cream in your freezer or those fresh donuts they sell around the corner.
We love dates and especially love their health benefits. Then there’s dried mango, dried apricot, dried berries, the list truly goes on. And, when you snack on these sweet treats you can bask in the pride that you’re actually supplying your body with nutrients and vitamins it needs, rather than junk, which it certainly does not need!
